"My child is just weak in Maths" (or Science, or History) is one of the most common things we hear from parents. But "weak in a subject" usually means one of two very different things, and mixing them up leads to the wrong fix, wasted tuition hours, and a child who quietly starts believing they're "just not good at it."

Problem type 1: They don't understand the concept

This is a genuine comprehension gap. The child hasn't grasped how or why something works: the steps of a method feel arbitrary rather than logical, and they can't apply the idea to a slightly different question. More explanation, worked examples, and one-on-one tutoring genuinely help here, because the missing piece really is knowledge.

Problem type 2: They understand it, but can't retain it

This is far more common than parents realise. The child understands the lesson perfectly in class, can even explain it back to you that evening, and then draws a blank in the exam hall two weeks later, as if the topic was never covered at all. This isn't a comprehension problem. It's a retention problem, and it's frequently mistaken for one because the symptom (a wrong answer) looks identical on paper.

How to tell which one you're dealing with

Ask your child to explain the topic back to you a few days after learning it, without notes or prompting. If they can explain it clearly but still perform poorly on tests weeks later, retention, not understanding, is the bottleneck. A useful second check: ask them to solve a slightly different version of a problem they got right in class. If they can adapt the method, comprehension is solid; if they freeze, the concept itself may not have fully landed.

Why more tuition doesn't always fix a retention problem

Extra tuition hours add more input, but if the underlying issue is that information doesn't transfer into long-term memory, more input just means more forgetting, and more frustration for everyone involved. Parents often escalate tuition hours before diagnosing which type of problem they're actually solving, which is understandable, but rarely efficient.
