Exam season brings the same question to almost every parent's mind: is there anything we can actually do, this week, to help our child remember more? The good news is yes: some techniques help immediately, even without formal training. The five below are backed by memory research and cost nothing but a slightly different approach to revision.
1. Space out revision instead of cramming
Reviewing material across several short sessions beats one long cramming session, because each review strengthens the memory trace before it fades. A topic revised for 20 minutes on three separate days will usually be remembered far better a month later than the same hour spent in a single sitting the night before.
2. Test recall, don't just re-read
Re-reading notes feels productive but barely helps memory, since it creates familiarity, not retrieval strength. Actively trying to recall the answer from memory first, even getting it wrong before checking, builds a far stronger memory trace than passive review ever does. Flashcards, self-quizzing, or simply asking "what do you remember, without looking?" all work on this principle.
3. Turn lists into pictures
Abstract facts such as dates, formulas, and vocabulary lists are hard to hold onto because the brain isn't naturally built to remember disconnected symbols. Turning them into a vivid, even silly, mental picture makes them dramatically more memorable, because the brain is exceptionally good at remembering images and stories. This is the core idea behind photographic memory techniques, and it works even for subjects that don't feel "visual" at all, like history dates or chemical formulas.
4. Teach in "chunks," not walls of text
Working memory can only hold a handful of items at once, so trying to absorb a whole chapter in one pass usually means most of it never makes it past short-term memory. Breaking a topic into 3 to 4 item chunks, mastered one at a time before moving to the next, is far more effective and far less overwhelming for the child doing the studying.
5. Sleep is not optional
Memory consolidation, the process of moving information from short-term to long-term memory, happens largely during sleep, not while awake studying. A late-night cram session the day before an exam often does more harm than good, trading the one process that would have locked in the day's revision for a few extra hours of re-reading.
